The cities of Longview and Kelso Washington are ready for another Babe Ruth World Series event.  The area previously hosted the 1990 Bambino World Series, the 1997 Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series, the 2001 Babe Ruth 14-year-old World Series and the 2004 13-15 World Series.  The citizens of both Longview and Kelso have a rich history of supporting the showcase events of Babe Ruth Baseball.

Ideally situated between Seattle and Portland, Oregon, the Longview-Kelso area offers residents a comfortable, rural lifestyle rich with opportunities for year-round outdoor recreation.  Residents are removed from urban congestion, yet are within an easy drive of the big Northwest cities.

Longview residents are proud of their tradition and heritage.  A planned city, Longview was founded by Kansas City timber baron Robert A. Long who purchased 14,000 acres of Columbia River valley to build a lumber mill and accompanying town.  Construction began in 1922 and by 1927 the town was mostly complete.  Today, Mr. Long’s vision has become reality, a unique blending of commercial, industrial and residential interests benefiting the entire area.

The 2009 World Series is also being hosted by the neighboring city of Kelso.  The city is named for founder Peter Crawford, who hailed from the Scottish town of the same name.  Kelso features a shopping mall, a historic downtown train depot, the Cowlitz County Museum and the official World Series hotel, the Kelso Red Lion Inn.

In Longview-Kelso, you are always close to a great outdoor experience.  There are over 400 acres of public parks including Longview’s crown jewel Lake Sacajawea, a 1.5 mile-long park in the heart of the city.  The area is known for fishing, hiking and boating.  As the gateway to the Mount St. Helens National Monument, the area has two visitor centers along the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway leading into the blast zone.

The 2009 Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series will be played at Story Field on the campus of Lower Columbia College in downtown Longview.  The park is the home of the LCC Red Devils, who have won nine championships since 1970.  The infield is made of a new Astro-Play synthetic surface with the outfield natural turf.  The 2,000 seat park will be increased to 3,500 for the World Series and the fence dimensions will be 310 down the lines and 370 to center field.  Former major leaguers who played for LCC at Story Field are Buddy Black and Rick Sweet.

The Longview World Series Committee was formed back in 1989.  The group of volunteers put together Longview-Kelso’s four prior World Series events and they look forward to adding another great Babe Ruth showcase to its legacy.
